The Hazards of Uranium
Uranium is the only naturally-occurring material that can be used to make an atomic bomb or to fuel a nuclear reactor. It is the key element behind all nuclear fission technology, military and civilian.
Plutonium is a uranium derivative, created inside every nuclear reactor that is fuelled with uranium. Plutonium can also be used to make nuclear weapons or to fuel a nuclear reactor, but without uranium there would be no plutonium to begin with.
The following articles and audio-visual resources on uranium deal with (1) the military uses of uranium, (2) uranium as a nuclear reactor fuel, (3) radioactive wastes (tailings) left over from uranium mining, (4) the health hazards of uranium and its byproducts, (5) the politics and the business of uranium.
